Professor Michael Angelo B. Promentilla is a leading figure in environmental engineering, known for his groundbreaking work in sustainable materials and waste management. As a full-time professor at De La Salle University, Manila, and head of the Waste and Resource Management Unit at the Center for Sustainable Development and Engineering Research, he has dedicated his career to developing eco-friendly solutions that address global sustainability issues.

Sustainable Development Goals:

9┃Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

SDG 9 promotes sustainable industrialization and technology. This was hindered by the pandemic, as market prices increased and economies underwent recession. Infrastructures for transportation, energy, and livelihood using green technology will improve the standard of living and end poverty.

Many cities around the globe aren’t considered as “future-proof”. This is due to the rise of extreme poverty, inequalities, and poor urban planning. Urban planning, specifically, must be practiced to lessen pollution and improve the quality of life in terms of transportation and the environment.

By advocating these causes, we can look forward to a future where basic needs are met sustainably.

SDG 12 promotes recycling in our daily lives. It reminds us to be mindful of ways to minimize the environmental impact of consumption patterns.

Consumers and Business Owners can practice being eco-friendly by adopting and pushing for sustainable choices. By reducing, reusing, and recycling, environmental degradation will be reduced.

Climate change is related to global warming, which causes the planet’s temperature to rise. All people are affected, and nature and wildlife are even threatened. Massive natural disasters have been recorded in the past decade because of this phenomenon, disrupting economies and affecting millions.

The emission of Carbon Dioxide (Co2) is encouraged to be lessened. The gas contributes to the Greenhouse Effect (GHG), which traps heat in the atmosphere, causing global warming. To learn more ways to help, you may visit the website Act Now | United Nations.

SDG 15 targets to conserve life on land, including plants, animals, and other members of the biodome. The world is currently experiencing severe biodiversity loss.

Let us remember that without the environment, humanity won’t meet the basic needs to sustain life. Biodiversity loss also results in zoonotic diseases – diseases from animals that can be transmitted to humans.

That said, we must practice recycling, consume what we only need, and respect nature.
