“Gobyernong tapat, angat buhay lahat.”

Corruption and lack of accountability continue to wreak havoc on the country’s economic situation as “trapos” (traditional politicians) continue to rule the political scene, embezzling public funds for their worldly and selfish desires. As the election period unfolds, many politicians knock on voters’ hearts, making grand promises for a better Philippines. However, one individual stands out—someone who remains true to her commitments even without a government position—Atty. Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo.

Leni Robredo is a leader driven by faith, service, and communion in her mission for her community, serving as the vice president of the Philippines from 2016 to 2022. During her time in office, she transformed the role of the vice president from a largely ceremonial position into an advocacy-driven office. As part of her vision, Robredo launched Angat Buhay as the flagship advocacy program of the Office of the Vice President (OVP), implementing initiatives to end poverty.

According to a December 2021 report, Angat Buhay has assisted around 622,000 Filipino families since 2016, with P520 million in funding from various sources, mostly private sector donations. Although no longer in the government, through Angat Buhay, she has continued serving the people, creating programs to improve Filipinos’ lives nationwide. After her term as vice president, Robredo reintroduced the Angat Buhay Foundation as a non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO). She established it on July 1, 2022, seeking to empower Filipinos to become active citizens and contribute to their communities.

Uplifting Lives

Angat Buhay is built on six core advocacy pillars—public education, health, nutrition, food security, climate action and sustainability, community engagement, and arts and culture. These align with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). In relation to the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand, Angat Buhay has spearheaded notable initiatives aimed at improving the STEM field and the lives of Filipinos.

At the first anniversary of Angat Buhay as an NGO, the organization claimed to have provided assistance to 20,131 families and 15,636 individuals from 176 communities, showing the unwavering commitment to bridging the gaps from rich to poor and helping everyone rise over adversities. From a COVID-19 response program, Angat Buhay’s flagship telemedicine program—Bayanihan e-Konsulta—expanded to include mental health and other non-emergency medical issues, granting aid to 7,706 unique patients with the help of 285 medical volunteers and at least a thousand non-medical volunteers from July 2022 to June 2023.

In addition, the foundation organized a nutrition program in seven sites, including Himamaylan in Negros Occidental and Maslog in Eastern Samar, where around 1,000 underweight and severely underweight children aged 6 to 59 months were enrolled. They also established 137 learning hubs nationwide to help non-readers and numeracy-challenged learners, a testament to the organization’s goal of quality education.

Moreover, Angat Buhay has continuously extended its reach, allocating immediate relief, assistance, and rehabilitation initiatives to thousands of families affected by natural and man-made disasters since its establishment and signed a deal to form a disaster preparedness and response center that trains volunteers in disaster response and serves as the foundation’s headquarters for relief operations. By equipping individuals with the necessary skills for disaster risk reduction and management, the initiative fosters a culture of preparedness and proactive response, ensuring that communities are supported during emergencies and empowered to handle future challenges with resilience and efficiency.

In August 2022, Robredo launched Angat Bayanihan—a volunteer network dedicated to empowering people’s organizations and assisting them in reciprocating kindness to their respective communities. Since then, it has deployed 188 grassroots organizations and 13,705 individual volunteers and initiated community kitchens, medical missions, and relief distribution. Angat Buhay embodies the spirit of “modern bayanihan,” promoting unity and empathy to help communities overcome their daily adversities.

“Mas radikal ang magmahal”

In Christian teachings, the proverb, “When you are thrown a stone, throw back a bread,” tells us to be kind no matter the circumstances. In one of Robredo’s presidential campaigns, she invited her supporters to exercise restraint and be gentle. “It is easy to argue, but it is more radical to love,” Robredo expressed in Filipino. The former vice president also urged to find feelings and sentiments that would unite all Filipinos—not as enemies due to indifferences, but as people fighting for each other.

Robredo exemplifies compassion, a key quality that defines a true and effective leader. Compassion is about showing sympathy toward someone sharing the same emotions with another person in distress. During the onslaught of Typhoon Kristine in November 2024, Angat Buhay provided assistance to over 50,000 Filipinos, amplifying the message of bayanihan by leveraging technology and social media and encouraging collective action for the common good. Despite the danger and her status as an ordinary citizen, Robredo waded into the water, valiantly lending her hands to the affected individuals.

Furthermore, Robredo incorporates the gospel value of justice in her leadership. Through Angat Buhay, Robredo strives for social equality and justice for all Filipinos. With or without a position in the government, Robredo courageously fights for what is right, even when she is boldly criticized by other political colors who call her names, such as “Lugaw Leni.” While Robredo’s political rivals may have assumed she would slow down her efforts to combat poverty and corruption after losing the 2022 presidential elections, the opposite occurred. She became more committed and doubled her efforts. Robredo has shown that serving others does not require a government position.

Most importantly, Robredo is a woman of integrity. During her vice presidency, her office achieved an unqualified opinion for four consecutive years, from 2018-2021, the highest audit rating given to a government agency by the Commission on Audit (COA). Although she failed to clinch the top post in the 2022 presidential elections, she won the hearts of over 15 million Filipinos hungry for accountability and transparency. She also stressed that if a candidate claims to care for a certain sector, they should be asked to show a receipt—displaying their capability and competitiveness as a servant leader.

Given her unwavering commitment to compassion, justice, and integrity, Robredo stands as a true embodiment of servant leadership, dedicated to uplifting the marginalized and advocating for the welfare of Filipinos, even in the face of widespread governmental corruption and political adversity. Robredo’s leadership is not defined by power or authority but by her persistent pursuit of meaningful change, ensuring that every citizen—especially those living on the breadline—is given the opportunity to thrive.

As the youth and future leaders, incorporating gospel values into daily lives is the key to obtaining equality for all and ensuring no Filipino is left behind.  More than a politician, Robredo is a public servant and a mother—not just to her three daughters but to every person she unconditionally supports and empowers.

One can only be fully human if they are ready to serve others selflessly and wholeheartedly, even if all odds are against them. Through this unshakable resolve to others, authentic leadership emerges—one that transcends politics and becomes a beacon of hope for a better, more just society, becoming a leader for everyone.
